1 Introduction
Rapid plasma reagent

RPR (rapid plasma reagent) is a screening test for syphilis. It detects antibodies in the blood of people who have syphilis. It is similar as venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test. Other test names are known as Rapid plasma reagin test; Syphilis screening test.

This test will be performed in following scenario: normal pregnancy, STD screening for the patients who have symptoms, and used as monitoring tool when the syphilis patients get antibiotic treatments. This test may also be performed for marriage license in some states.

Since the test will detect the antibody of blood, false negative results may be obtained because the individual may have a low level antibody produced, especially when it is in syphilis early or late stages. False positive results may be because of other disease conditions like HIV, Lyme disease, Malaria, Certain types of pneumonia and Systemic lupus erythematosus. Therefore, other test may need tobe performed to help & exclude for the diagnosis of syphilis.
